This week we made a simple version of modeling clay (play dough) that can be stored for weeks in a container or plastic bag. I love this recipe because I don’t have to cook it and wait for it to cool. The clay is ready to be played with as soon as you make it!
What you'll need:
2 cups sifted flour
1 cup salt
6 teaspoons alum
2 tablespoons oil (we used canola oil, but you can use vegetable or olive oil)
1 cup water
medium sized mixing bowl
re-sealable plastic bags or sealable container
food coloring (optional)
NOTE: ALUM is found in the baking section of most grocery stores. It acts as a preservative.
How we made ours:
1. Food coloring may be added to the water before mixing, if color is desired.
2. Mix all ingredients together in the bowl until they are smooth.
3. The clay will stay soft for weeks if you keep it in a sealed plastic bag or container.
We made two batches: One batch was dyed green for Turtle and the the other blue for Godzilla Boy. The boys were surprised after lunch, when they saw their play clay on the their picnic table. They could not wait to start creating with it! I plan on making more colorful play clay this month so that the boys will have plenty on hand.
